The Claude
Law Firm
Small law firms used to compare legal software to other legal software. Not anymore. In a community of law firm owners, one general-purpose AI now drives more conversation than every legal software product combined. Claude has become the yardstick the rest are measured against.

For twenty years, buying legal technology worked like buying a car. You compared one dealer’s model to another’s. Clio against MyCase. Westlaw against Lexis. One demand letter tool against the next. The choices were all legal software, and the yardstick was legal software too.
That has changed. Best Era, a law firm consulting firm, runs a private Slack community for law firm owners and their teams. We counted every message in its three AI and legal technology channels from June 15, 2024 through October 15, 2026. We removed every message from Best Era staff. We report only totals. No member’s name, firm, words, or work appears here.
The totals tell a plain story. A general-purpose AI model, built for everyone and not for lawyers, now takes up more of this community’s attention than the entire legal software category. And when members talk about legal software, Claude is in the room half the time.
How much are law firms talking about Claude?
In the second half of 2024, 2.8% of member messages mentioned Claude. Legal software products, taken together, appeared in 18.5%. ChatGPT appeared in 10.8%. By the first half of 2026 the order had flipped. Claude appeared in 17.4% of all messages. Legal software fell to 7.4%. ChatGPT fell to 3.4%.
The flip happened in one winter. In December 2025, members posted 19 messages about Claude and 43 about legal software. In January 2026 it was 51 to 18. Claude has led every month since. Two releases sit inside that window. Anthropic shipped Claude Cowork, a desktop agent that works across a user’s files and apps, in January 2026. On February 3, 2026, it released a legal plugin for Cowork. That day Thomson Reuters shares fell as much as 18%. RELX, the parent of LexisNexis, dropped 14%. Wolters Kluwer fell 13%.
Claude vs. legal software: one tool against a whole category
Legal software is built for lawyers. Claude is not. It has no docket calendar, no trust accounting, no citator. It is sold to everyone from coders to bakers. Yet in 2026 it drew more conversation in this community than any product made for law firms. It drew more than all of them together.
We tracked 23 legal software products by name. They include practice management systems such as Clio, Filevine, Lawmatics, SmartAdvocate, MyCase, and Smokeball. They include legal research and AI tools such as Westlaw and CoCounsel, Lexis+ AI, Harvey, Supio, Eve, EvenUp, vLex, and Midpage. In 2026, members mentioned Claude in 891 messages. They mentioned all 23 legal products in 378. The most discussed legal product, Clio, appeared in 127.
The new yardstick for legal tech
The more telling number is not how often Claude came up. It is where it came up. We looked at every thread, meaning a post and all its replies, in which a member named a legal software product. In late 2024, 5% of those threads also brought in Claude. In 2026, 51% did.
Half the time a member asked about a legal product, the conversation turned to Claude. Could Claude do this instead? Could it connect to that? Was the product worth its price next to what Claude already does? Legal software is no longer measured only against its competitors. It is measured against Claude.
Firms are not comparing one legal vendor to another. They are comparing every vendor to Claude.
Think of the smartphone and the GPS unit. Garmin still makes excellent navigation devices. But once the phone in your pocket gave directions, the question stopped being which GPS to buy. It became whether you needed one at all, and if so, what it did that the phone could not. Legal software vendors now face that question in every small firm that has learned what Claude can do.
The broader conversation shifted the same way. In 2026, 52% of all member messages sat in threads where Claude came up. In late 2024 the figure was 6%. Threads about legal software went the other way, from 45% of all member messages in late 2024 to 20% in 2026.
From prompts to plumbing
The words changed with the volume. Early messages were about prompts. The 2026 messages are about building: Cowork, connectors, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), skills, Claude Code. And the systems named most often in Claude conversations are the legal tools firms already pay for. Members are not only weighing those tools against Claude. They are wiring Claude into them.
Building showed up in the volume too. Messages announcing that a member had built something rose from 6 in 2024 to 24 in 2025 to 63 so far in 2026. In 2024, none named Claude. In 2026, 41% do. Claude posts also pulled more conversation behind them. In 2026, a top-level post about Claude drew an average of 4.8 replies. Every other post drew 2.5.
What still worries law firms about Claude
The volume was not all praise. Members traded warnings as often as wins. Cost and token use came up most. Usage limits and confidentiality came next, at about the same rate. Accuracy followed. These are the same questions any firm should ask of a legal vendor. Members asked them of Claude.
The national picture
Surveys show small firms using AI but not yet profiting from it. Clio’s 2026 report found 71% of solos and 75% of small firms use AI, yet only about a third say it raised revenue, against nearly 60% of enterprise firms. The volume in this community points to one reason. Using an AI tool is not the same as building the firm around one. The firms in this community are moving from the first to the second.
| Source | Finding | Year |
|---|---|---|
| ABA Legal Technology Survey Report | 18% of solo lawyers used AI, versus 46% at firms of 100+ lawyers | 2024 |
| Clio, Legal Trends for Solo and Small Firms | 72% of solos and 67% of small firms used AI in some capacity; only 8% and 4% had adopted it widely | 2025 |

| Best Era, The Claude Law Firm | Claude mentioned 2.4× as often as 23 legal software products combined; 51% of legal software threads bring in Claude | 2026 |
Claude for law firms: what the legal plugin and Cowork change
Claude is a general-purpose AI model made by Anthropic. Two releases turned it into a working tool for law firms. In January 2026, Anthropic shipped Claude Cowork, a desktop agent that works across a user’s files and apps. On February 3, 2026, it released a legal plugin for Cowork that helps review documents, flag risks, triage NDAs, and track compliance.
The bigger change is connectors. Through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Claude can read from and write to the systems a firm already runs. In this study, the systems members named most often in Claude conversations were Clio, Google Workspace, and Westlaw or Lexis. That is why Claude now sits in the middle of legal tech decisions instead of at the edge.
Claude is not a law firm in a box. It has no trust accounting and no citator, and it makes mistakes. Members who got the most from it kept a lawyer in the review seat, limited what it could read, and wrote down the rules before they let it act.
What it means for law firms and legal tech vendors
For legal tech vendors, the competitive set has changed. A small firm deciding on an intake tool, a drafting tool, or a reporting dashboard now asks a new first question: can we do this with Claude? A vendor that cannot answer it will lose deals to a $200 monthly subscription and a free weekend.
That does not mean legal software is finished. Legal products still drew 378 messages this year, and many Claude conversations were about connecting to them. Firms still need case management, research databases, and specialist tools. But the bar has moved. The best legal software will be the software that works with Claude, not the software that pretends Claude is not there.
For law firm owners, the lesson is simpler. You have this technology in your hands right now. The firms in this community are not waiting for a vendor to package it for them.
How law firm AI consultants help firms put Claude to work
Most firms do not need more AI. They need a plan for the AI they already have. A law firm AI consultant helps a firm decide where AI fits, what to build and what to buy, and how to run the firm around both.
Best Era’s AI consulting for law firms covers four steps. First, map the work: intake, drafting, case management, billing, and marketing. Second, choose the tools, including when Claude can replace or connect a legal software product and when it cannot. Third, set guardrails for confidentiality, privilege, and lawyer review. Fourth, train the people. Lawyers, paralegals, and staff each need to know what Claude does and what it must never do on its own.
Firms start with a two-day consulting intensive, a focused AI engagement, or paralegal training for the team doing the daily work. The Best Era Community is where firm owners compare notes, and it is where the data for this study came from.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude good for law firms?
For many small firms, yes, with guardrails. In the Best Era Community it is now the most discussed AI tool, mentioned 2.4 times as often as 23 legal software products combined. Members use it to draft, review documents, and connect systems like Clio and Westlaw. They also flag cost, confidentiality, usage limits, and accuracy. Use a business account, control what Claude can read, and have a lawyer review every output.
How much is Claude for lawyers?
Anthropic sells Claude by subscription. In 2026, individual plans start around $20 a month, higher-usage individual plans run about $100 to $200 a month, and team plans are priced per seat. Many members in this study reported using the $200 monthly plan. Check Anthropic’s pricing page for current terms.
How do law firms get started with Claude for legal work?
Start with a team or enterprise account so the firm controls seats and data settings. Install Claude Cowork, add Anthropic’s legal plugin, and connect the systems the firm already uses. Write firm-specific skills for repeat work like intake memos or demand letters. Then train staff and set written rules on what Claude may read and send.
What does a law firm AI consultant do?
A law firm AI consultant helps a firm decide where AI fits, what to build and what to buy, and how to run the firm around it. At Best Era, a law firm consulting firm, that means mapping workflows, choosing tools, connecting Claude to the firm’s systems, setting guardrails for confidentiality and review, and training lawyers and staff.
What is a Claude law firm?
A Claude law firm is a law firm that uses Anthropic’s Claude, a general-purpose AI model, as a working layer across its practice. It drafts, analyzes, and connects to the firm’s case management, research, and business systems, instead of treating AI as a stand-alone chatbot.
Are small law firms using Claude?
In the Best Era Community, a private group of law firm owners and staff, Claude appeared in 17.4% of all member messages in the first half of 2026, up from 2.8% in the second half of 2024. In 2026 it was mentioned 2.4 times as often as 23 legal software products combined.
Is Claude replacing legal software?
Not outright. Legal software products still drew 378 member messages in 2026, and many Claude conversations were about connecting Claude to tools like Clio and Westlaw. What changed is the yardstick. In 2026, 51% of threads about a legal software product also brought in Claude, up from 5% in late 2024.
How should a law firm evaluate legal tech in 2026?
Start with a new first question: can this be done with a general-purpose AI tool the firm already pays for? Then ask what the legal product adds on top: data, integrations, compliance, support, or specialized accuracy. Best Era, a law firm consulting firm, helps firms work through that decision.
How was this study done?

How we did this
- Data. Every message in three channels of the Best Era Community Slack (ai-advanced-and-philosophy, legaltech, and ai-101) from June 15, 2024 through October 15, 2026: 12,278 messages.
- Staff removed. We removed all 3,915 messages from Best Era’s six staff members. Every figure on this page uses the remaining 8,363 member messages.
- Matching. We matched messages by keyword. Claude includes Claude, Anthropic, Cowork, Opus, and Sonnet. ChatGPT includes ChatGPT, GPT, OpenAI, and Codex. Gemini includes Gemini, Bard, and NotebookLM. The 23 legal products are Clio, Filevine, Lawmatics, Litify, SmartAdvocate, MyCase, CasePeer, Smokeball, PracticePanther, Neos, Case Status, Westlaw/CoCounsel/Casetext, Lexis+ AI/Protégé, Harvey, vLex/Vincent, EvenUp, Supio, Eve, Spellbook, Midpage, Clearbrief, GC.AI, and Darrow.
- Threads. A thread is a top-level post plus all replies to it. A post with no replies counts as its own thread.
- Privacy. This study reports aggregate counts only. It includes no member names, firm names, quotes, or individual examples.
- Limits. A mention is not proof of use. Talking about a tool can mean praising it, criticizing it, or asking about it. The community is self-selected and interested in AI. Some members are vendors or consultants rather than lawyers. The final period is partial. Keyword matching misses some messages and over-counts a few.
- Disclosure. Best Era trains and consults with law firms on AI tools, including Claude.
